Washing Adult Cloth Diapers: The Simple 3-Step System That Saves You Time (And Your Sanity)

Want to save money, help the planet, and stop running to the store for bulky disposables: all without spending hours in the laundry room? You’ve come to the right place.

One of the biggest hurdles for people considering the switch to reusable adult diapers is the "L" word: Laundry. We get it. Life is already busy, and the thought of adding a complex washing routine to your daily schedule can feel overwhelming. Whether you are managing incontinence for yourself or you’re a caregiver looking for a more sustainable solution, you need a system that works as hard as you do.

At Threaded Armor, we believe that managing incontinence shouldn't feel like a second job. That’s why we’ve perfected a 3-step washing system that is tried, proven, and designed to keep your washing adult cloth diapers routine under an hour of active work per week.

It’s time to stop the "disposable cycle" and embrace a routine that saves your sanity and your wallet.

Why the Switch to Reusable Adult Diapers is Worth the Extra Load

Before we dive into the "how," let’s talk about the "why." Did you know that over 25 million adult Americans experience some form of urinary incontinence? You are definitely not alone. Yet, for years, the only option was a scratchy, plastic-feeling disposable that ended up in a landfill.

Switching to reusable adult diapers isn't just about being eco-friendly (though that’s a huge plus!). It’s about comfort, dignity, and massive cost savings. Most users find that they save thousands of dollars over just a couple of years by making the switch. Plus, our Lounge Briefs are designed to feel like real underwear, not a medical device.

The Golden Rule: It’s Just Laundry

The most important thing to remember is this: It’s just laundry. We often treat incontinence products with a level of "ick factor" that we don’t apply to a baby’s cloth diaper or even a heavily soiled gym towel. Once you realize that your washing machine is literally designed to handle bio-matter and bacteria, the process becomes much less intimidating.

Our goal is to make washing adult cloth diapers as normal as washing your favorite t-shirt.

The Simple 3-Step Washing System

Here is the secret to keeping your diapers clean, smelling fresh, and lasting for years. No complicated chemistry degree required.

Step 1: The Cold Water Rinse (No Detergent)

The first step is all about prep. You want to remove the bulk of the urine and any solid residue before the heavy-duty cleaning starts.

How to do it:

  • Place your wet diapers in the washing machine. If they are soiled, use a mini-shower to rinse them in the toilet first.
  • Select a "Cold Rinse" or a "Quick Wash" cycle.
  • Do not add detergent yet.
  • This cycle usually takes about 15–20 minutes.

Why it works: Using cold water first prevents stains from setting and ensures that you aren't washing your diapers in "dirty" water during the main cycle. Think of it as a deep power-wash for the fabric fibers.

Step 2: The Hot Water Wash (With Detergent)

Now that the diapers are prepped, it’s time to actually get them clean. This is where the magic happens.

How to do it:

  • Keep the diapers in the machine.
  • Select a "Heavy Duty" or "Normal" wash cycle with Hot or Warm water.
  • Important: Keep the temperature below 120°F (48°C). Avoid the "Sanitary" cycle on most machines, as the extreme heat can damage the waterproof PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) layer over time.
  • Add a high-quality detergent.

The Detergent Secret: We recommend a strong, traditional detergent like Tide Original. Why? Because many "Free and Clear" or "Natural" detergents contain oils or softening agents that build up on the fabric. Over time, this buildup creates a "repelling" effect, where the diaper stops absorbing liquid and starts leaking. Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets at all costs! They are the enemy of absorbency.

Step 3: Dry on Medium Heat

The final step is getting them ready to wear again. One of the best things about Threaded Armor products is that they are designed for efficiency.

How to do it:

  • Move the diapers to the dryer.
  • Tumble dry on Medium Heat.
  • Because our designs are streamlined, they typically dry in a single standard cycle.

Pro Tip: If you have the space and the weather allows, line drying is a great way to extend the life of your diapers even further. The sun acts as a natural whitener and disinfectant! However, for most of us, a medium-heat tumble dry is the perfect balance of convenience and care.

Designing Your "Sanity-Saving" Routine

The 3-step system is easy, but the real win comes from building a routine that fits your life. Most of our customers find that washing every 2–3 days is the "sweet spot."

The Evening Routine:

  1. 5:00 PM: Toss the diapers in for the Step 1 Cold Rinse while you start dinner.
  2. 5:30 PM: Add detergent and start the Step 2 Hot Wash. Go enjoy your evening!
  3. 7:00 PM: Move them to the dryer (Step 3).
  4. Before Bed: Pull out fresh, clean diapers.

If you forget to move them to the dryer until the morning? No big deal! They’ll stay fresh in the machine overnight. We are all about low-stress solutions here.

Handling Solid Waste: Let’s Be Real

We can’t talk about washing adult cloth diapers without mentioning solid waste. It’s the part everyone is nervous about, but it’s simpler than you think.

If there is solid waste, simply "plop" it into the toilet before putting the diaper into your diaper pail or wet bag. If the waste is more liquid, a simple diaper sprayer (which attaches to your toilet) can be a total game-changer. It takes 30 seconds and keeps your hands clean. Once the bulk is gone, the washing machine handles the rest.

Combatting the Stigma

There is often a sense of shame associated with incontinence, but we want to change that narrative. Having to do an extra load of laundry every few days isn't a "burden": it’s a proactive step toward taking control of your comfort and health.

When you use reusable adult diapers, you aren't just managing a condition; you are choosing a higher quality of life. You’re choosing fabrics that are soft against your skin, designs that don't crinkle when you walk, and a system that respects your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I wash my diapers with other clothes?

We generally recommend washing your diapers in their own load. This ensures they have enough room to get properly agitated and rinsed. However, if you have a very small load of diapers, you can add small items like washcloths or socks to the Step 2 Hot Wash to help with agitation.

What if they start to smell?

If you notice a lingering odor, it usually means one of two things: you aren't using enough detergent, or there is a buildup of minerals/fabric softener. Usually, an extra rinse cycle or a "strip" wash (using a specialized mineral remover) will fix the problem. You can also add 3–4 drops of lavender essential oil to the final rinse as a natural antiseptic and scent booster.

How many diapers do I need?

To maintain a stress-free washing routine, we suggest having enough diapers for 2–3 days. For most people, this is between 8 and 12 pairs. This gives you plenty of time to wash one batch while still having clean ones ready to go. You can see our full range of styles here.
